Potential of Temperate, Tropical, and Sub-Tropical Exotic Maize Germplasm for Increased Gains in Yield Performance in Sub-Tropical Breeding Programs

چکیده

Exotic germplasm (i.e., beyond the breeder’s target area) has traditionally been used to broaden genetic base of local (germplasm within populations, but little done assess gains that could be induced by this breeding practice in sub-tropical regions Africa. Here, eight maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines developed from pedigree crosses exotic and sub-tropically adapted lines; STALs) were inter-mated together with six elite STALs, a partial diallel mating scheme, order depict yield can made when genes are integrated pool. The crossing scheme yielded total 91 F1s which evaluated nine commercial checks multi-environmental trials (METs) at locations representing agro-ecologies is predominantly grown Zimbabwe. Across site Analysis Variance (ANOVA) showed differences grain (GY) performance F1s. Significant genotype x environment effects was also detected for GY GEI; p < 0.05). parents temperate background [i.e., P7 (S) P2 (T)] highest potential (e.g., G44; = 10.52 tha−1). Apart showing high potential, G44 demonstrated stable across diverse mature earlier than best check hybrid. In conclusion, incorporation genes, especially those regions, may improve yielding ability stability introduce earliness maturity populations regions.

The Sub-Annual Breeding Cycle of a Tropical Seabird

Breeding periodicity allows organisms to synchronise breeding attempts with the most favourable ecological conditions under which to raise offspring. For most animal species, ecological conditions vary seasonally and usually impose an annual breeding schedule on their populations; sub-annual breeding schedules will be rare. We use a 16-year dataset of breeding attempts by a tropical seabird, th...

Hygiene as Applied to Tropical and Sub-Tropical Climates

We have read the book with great interest, and while we cannot sa}7 that it contains anything not familiar to the student of hygiene in India, yet it certainly contains much not met with in ordinary manuals of hygiene, and as such is of special value. It is admirably illustrated. The chapter on conservancy is-particularly good, and to the reader at home full of new matter, the diagrams of forms...

A Gene-Oriented Haplotype Comparison Reveals Recently Selected Genomic Regions in Temperate and Tropical Maize Germplasm

The extensive genetic variation present in maize (Zea mays) germplasm makes it possible to detect signatures of positive artificial selection that occurred during temperate and tropical maize improvement. Here we report an analysis of 532,815 polymorphisms from a maize association panel consisting of 368 diverse temperate and tropical inbred lines. We developed a gene-oriented approach adapting...
